RESTORATION AND RE-FUNCTIONALIZATION OF THE FORMER NURSING BOARD AND XV CENTURY TORRE DEI RIGHI, AS THE NEW URBAN CENTER OF EMPOLI (FLORENCE)

The recovery of the former nurses’ boarding school building was characterized by interventions aimed at the consolidation and recovery of a highly degraded structure as well as of the historical valorisation of the building itself, with the aim of creating a multidisciplinary creative hub in which new activities can live in close synergy with existing ones. The functions are strongly integrated with the rest of the city and with the system of open spaces through new public connections which make the entire complex a dynamic and permeable place, open to citizens. Through the refunctionalisation, a series of spaces were created aimed at encouraging the relationship between the Municipality and the citizens, where institutions, citizens and local actors can build a constant, transparent and participatory dialogue for the Empoli area. The higher levels of the building are now the new childrens’s library of Empoli, offering plenty of related educational activities.
